5 Ways to Improve Your Employee Onboarding Process

Do you remember your first day on a new job? Most new hires are anxious the first time they pull up to a new workplace. Although they've already landed a position with your company, they still have a lot to prove to you, the boss, and to their new teammates. To help your new hires ease into their roles, here are five ways to improve your onboarding process:

1. Send documentation ahead of time
Before your new hire gets to the office, warm them up to your company by sharing documentation about your business. By giving them information about what they can expect, such as dress code, processes, and the people they'll be working with, they'll feel like a part of the team before they even start the first day.

2. Share the news with the rest of the team
Perhaps one of the best ways to make your new hire feel welcome in your company is to share the big news. Don't make them introduce themselves to the staff. Show them you're welcoming them on board with open arms by making an announcement and the introductions instead.

3. Give a full tour
You've walked these halls for years, but to your new hire, it's all foreign. Show them everything they need to know on a tour of your office. Some of the most crucial areas of your business will be the bathroom, break room, and where they are to store their personal belongings.

4. Start small
Don't let the training get too far ahead before you're sure your new hire has caught on. Start with small, bite-sized assignments to help them ease into their new role. They won't feel overwhelmed this way.

5. Have some fun
In all, the process should be fun and exciting for your new hires. Start their job off on the right foot by making the onboarding process engaging and entertaining. They'll appreciate the lighthearted spirit on a day when their nerves are undoubtedly high-strung, and you'll appreciate the entertainment during what could become a repetitive process.

4 Ways to Keep Employees at Your Company

Losing employees is always difficult because the time and effort, not to mention the training, can cost your business valuable time and money. While the position needs to be filled, the process can be quite the headache. While an unexpected employee loss is impossible to anticipate, creating the right atmosphere at your company will help you retain your employees. Here are four ways to keep your employees:

1. Be Particular
First and foremost, when it comes to hiring employees, be particular about who you choose to work for your company. Because the hiring process can be so time-consuming, it can be easy to quickly hire someone without giving them a background check (this is a good resource), or taking the time to call their former employers and listed references to gain insight into who they are as both a person and as an employee. Doing your best to hire the right employees for your company will help reduce your employee turnover rate.

2. Provide Opportunities
The reason that many employees leave their current job is not necessarily because they are unhappy with the company itself. More often than not, an employee is leaving the position because they have been offered more opportunities at another company. Smaller businesses might not have the budget to offer employees the same amount as a larger company, but doing your best to offer your employees the best you can will help keep your employees around.

3. Foster an Inclusive Atmosphere
One of the best ways to keep employees with your company is to foster an employee-oriented atmosphere. Not only do you want your employees to be motivated and feel comfortable at work, it is also important to be as communicative with them as possible. If an employee feels like they do not have a role in the company's big picture, they can feel as if there work is menial and useless.

4. Stay True to Your Values
A ruthless company that crosses a few lines to get to the top can alienate ethical employees. Good, hard-working employees want to work for a company that maintains its moral compass. Stay true to your business values, through both the good and bad times your company will face. It will show your employees that this business is a respectable company that will not compromise in the face of adversity.
